The Irish Craft Beer Market 2019
Irelands
Modern Craft Beer Market
A dynamic vibrant art showcasing the
passion and creativity of brewers right across Ireland.
From
humble beginnings the Craft Beer movement (Almost rebellion at times) in
Ireland has helped the Micro- Breweries as much as it has the Irish “Craft Spirits” industry, it has almost
paved the way for the resurrection of Gin, with Kinsale and Dingle Gin now
flying off the shelves.
On the
Business end of the Craft beer market, the Irish market was saturated and great breweries were lost as a result, Independent Brewing in Carraroe, Connemara
Co. Galway is one such brewery that permanently closed (2018), as in an article
in The Journal, Owner Kevin O’Hara eludes to the hard-fought market and the
struggles of finding market share, he states
“The real problem in the market
is growth. It’s just not there for craft beers and the macro brands which made
these pseudo craft beers have put a lot of pressure on breweries like us. They
soaked up a lot of the growth”.
Moving
to present day the market has stabilized and there is less fluctuation, maybe
also less innovation and new brews, as it seems the Breweries who survived the
initial frenzy have earned their place to stay. The public are a lot more open
minded has been a lot more integration into our pub culture of craft beers and
it’s no longer seen as a Fad or fashion.
Important changes which have
helped protect the Irish Craft Brewers include the logo now on true and
certified craft beer.
This
is one of the most important developments in the Irish Craft Beer industry.
This is
an initiative of Beer Ireland, the Artisan Brewer’s Association. The logo makes it easy to clearly identify beer
that has been brewed by independently owned Irish microbreweries.
This
prevents the brewing giants from marketing ales such as “Cute Hoor” etc. As
craft style beers, when in fact they are mass produced in large scale
manufacturing.
The
Craft beer market is in good health it seems and long may it last, from humble
beginnings to rubbing shoulders with the corporate giants.
