Franciscan Well Rebel Red !

This wonderful example of an Irish Red is from the Rebel County of Cork. The company have a long and popular history in Cork. The Franciscan Well brand is now owned by Molson Coors the Canadian/American giants. This beer is great value for money and is regularly on special across the Country I recently managed to pick up 4 bottles for only 8 Euros !! The normal price is 2.60 euro which is still cheaper than other crafts ! The Quality isn't lacking either as this beer brings together both rich taste and wonderful mouth feel , whilst also being light enough to consume many more than your RDA at 4.3% in 330ml !

As I fore-mentioned the beer is light and refreshing on the Palette while still providing the malted, biscuit, chocolaty, characteristics of a Irish Red Ale. It really is no wonder that the beer won Gold and the World Beer Awards, from a marketing point of view the label is well designed an easily recognizable logo with no waffle to confuse you and put you off, it is crisp , clear and to the point! It is amazing something so rich and with such depth can still be light and delightful.

It can be compared to a great chocolate cake , rich and sweet whilst also being light enough to enjoy! It a great example of an Irish Red Ale and I would highly recommend it to any Craft Beer enthusiast looking to try out Irish Red Ales it holds its own against beer twice the price and really doesn't disappoint.

  1. Not sure it's actually brewed in Cork, though. I understand a lot of the core Franciscan Well beer is brewed at the Molson Coors mothership in England pending the opening of their own brewery in the Cork docklands. If a beer has "Brewed in the EU" on the label you can be fairly sure it's not what it claims to be. Not that that affects the taste, of course.

    2. Yes, they've been brewing in Cork for a while now and have changed the label appropriately. I'm not even sure bottled Rebel Red still exists. I only ever see cans.

    3. Yeah I do remember seeing the bottles being sold off cheap in the supermarkets, probably to make room for the launch of the canned series !
